-Japanese Joinery, you see on this page, is one traditional technics that continues since there were no nails and what so ever to use for homebuilding.
it's still on the stage you can choose for you own house even in this era, though it's rare to be chosen in Japan nowadays.
Craftsmanship in this country allowed this way of building to survive so long, but, yes, to be honest now is the tough time to get through.

The reason, is simple.
Efficiency.

Traditional technics need traditional time flows.

you wouldn't believe the house in this picture has same roof frame structure with one building in "Horyuji"  that has one of the oldest wooden buildings in Japan.

We respect traditions, but not only that.
After that terrifying earthquake we faced in 1995, we started 1/1 scale experiences to realize its weak points and we've been improving  our way of construction.  The answer was simple.

木は天然の素材であり、故に工業製品と比べバラツキが目立ちます。バラツキを前提としたモノづくりとなるので、完成度を高めようとすると自然と木の癖や表情を汲んで仕事をすることになります。適材適所となる木使い。一見、何の変哲も無いことのように聞こえますが、木をムダにせず、コストも抑制し、なおかつ空間の価値を高める、一石三鳥の取り組みが、日々成されています。

伝統工法の家作りを始めて、はや20年。その中で得た最大の財産の一つは、職人さんたちとの今の繋がりです。
技術があるだけではなく、人への優しさや仕事への厳しさといった高いヒューマン・スキルを兼ね備えたプレーヤー達が、スミカの家作りには集まってきます。
